In Their Words: “I think ‘Pepper’ was a turning point for
what can be considered pop music. We’re making a record that blends all
these different styles but ultimately, because of the song structures
and hooks, is a pop record, or a new idea of what a pop record can be.
[Slipknot percussionist] Clown
became sort of an unlikely fan of my music and we struck up a
friendship, talking about music and art on email and the phone. One
time I offhandedly mentioned that we were talking about covering this
song and it turns out that Butthole Surfers are his fave band ever. He
never played on a cover song, Slipknot never covered
anyone, but he really wanted to play on this one which was exciting to
me because he gets what we’re doing. Brody had him record to a much
faster bpm then cut up and slowed down his tracks so that we got his
super-hard hit but stretched out over time. It gives it a thick quality
that you hear in the low end of lots of the music I like.”

Hey Blaise, interesting post. You make some really good points, I've never really thought about what defines a good song before. However, I think maybe you've underestimated the importance that passion has in music. To me, music is all about self expression. If you can effectively express yourself, I don't think anything else matters, you have written a great song. Whether or not others agree is another point entirely. There seems to be two approaches to song writing. Song writing for others, and song writing for yourself. I constantly struggle with this when I write music, because on one hand I really want to write music other people will like to listen to, on the other hand I want to write music that expresses how I feel. When I try too hard to write songs other people will enjoy it usually falls apart, I lose interest in the song quickly and move on to something else. I think the highest quality songs that appeal to the masses are the ones that are written as self expression but happen to have the three necessary attributes you mentioned. Tears in Heaven, is the first song that jumps to mind while I'm writing this. Anyways keep writing, the blog is interesting. But you gotta do something about the default wordpress theme Take it easy!

Thanks for dropping by Shyam. We didn't quite follow your opening sentence. Have you just got back from Manali? And, btw, thanks for telling us about Naggar castle. It's a shame you couldn't go up to Rohtang. It's an absolutely amazing experience. Worth going back for a second time. The road from Swarghat to Chandigarh on our return journey was a smooth drive for us. If only we'd taken it on the way up, instead of the Baddi one!Do drop by again will be posting our Kaziranga experience in a day or two. Happy travelling!
