.5: The Gray Chapter is the upcoming fifth studio album by Slipknot. Scheduled for a world-wide release on October 21 2014, it is the first album by the band in 6 years and the first to not feature bassist Paul Gray (after his death in 2010) and drummer Joey Jordison (who parted ways in 2013). The album title The Gray Chapter was a tribute to the death and loss of Paul Gray #2.
On December 12, 2013, the band announced through their official website that long-time member and drummer, Joey Jordison had parted ways with the band after 18 years citing personal reasons. Joey Jordison later posted on his official Facebook page that he "did not quit Slipknot", and that he was both "shocked" and "blindsided" by the news. Both Joey Jordison and Slipknot have independently promised to release further details about the split. Corey Taylor noted that Jordison would not be appearing on the new album as he did not partake in any songwriting sessions prior to his departure.
Production of the upcoming album began in late 2013. Corey Taylor described the album as "very dark" and a cross between Iowa and Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses). A standard and deluxe edition of the album be released. The deluxe edition will feature two bonus tracks.
On February 27, 2014, all of the band's social media outlets were blacked out with no reason given. On July 15, the band began releasing short teasers for the .5: The Gray Chapter for over a 2 week period which turned out to be clips from the official video along with samples from a song entitled "The Negative One". The song was released on August 1, 2014 and an accompanying music video was released on August 5th, 2014. It was directed by Mr. Shawn Crahan, however did not feature any of the band members.
On August 13, 2014 the band revealed the cover art for their official radio single entitled "The Devil in I". and the single premiered on August 24, 2014. Plans for a music video were revealed on August 4, 2014 by Corey Taylor during an interview for BBC Radio 1.
Slipknot’s video for ‘The Negative One,’ directed by Mr Shawn Crahan, is creepy as hell. The music video features a disheveled-looking woman undressing and generally freaking out in a creepy, dimly lit room. Crahan adapted the video's images from Slipknot's interactive website and the visual element adds to the full experience of ‘The Negative One’. After weeks of Slipknot’s visual teasers, we finally know where they came from.
Corey Taylor talking to the BBC
“People don’t know what to expect from us and that’s kinda the way we like it. the great thing is that - I was telling this to somebody the other day - ”The Negative One” isn’t our single. That was just a gift for the fans, like we wanted them to hear a piece of the album. The single comes out in a few weeks and it’s completely different. It’s more melodic, but it’s dark, it’s powerful man, its something different, people are going to lose their minds when they hear that.”.. “It’s got the spirit. The thing I love is that everyone’s reactions are very, very similar. They love the fact that there’s new Slipknot out. They also love the fact that it feels like old school meets new school. Like you can feel the original craziness of the early stuff but you can tell that the evolution has happened. And that’s kind of what we were shooting for, ya know? Remember I said I wanted the album to feel like a cross between “Iowa” and “Vol. 3” and I think we did that. Wait till you hear the whole album, because this story is so deep and so honest and so crazy that people are going to lose their minds when they hear it.”
The music video for 'The Negative One' was released on the band's official website via a private YouTube link after a countdown on their official site timed out on August 5th. The next day, the video was made publicly available.
‘The Devil In I’ was recently released as Slipknot’s first official single from their fifth studio album, ‘.5: The Gray Chapter,’ although the track ‘The Negative One‘ was unleashed prior as a special treat. Fans have been going nuts for the new Slipknot material, and now there’s a brand new video to sink our teeth into.
Plans of a music video for the song were revealed by Corey Taylor during an interview for BBC Radio 1. The band put out a casting call asking for "human maggots" for a video that was shot on August 22 and 23, 2014. They requested people between the ages of 20 and 35 with the condition they be okay with shooting barefoot.
On September 11, 2014 Slipknot uploaded a trailer for The Devil in I music video to be uploaded the next day, the trailer featured 2 people in red shrouds with eye-holes cut speculating that the red shrouds may be the new member's masks. The music video was uploaded on September 12 and featured the band members in a mental asylum surrounded by fans covered completely and dancing in straight jackets while the band performed. It also featured the band in their All Hope Is Gone masks committing suicide in various ways such as Corey setting a bomb off while he sat at a table and Mick peeling his own face off. This is perhaps a metaphor for the death of the old Slipknot and the start of a new one. The new drummer and bassist were seen performing with the band.
‘The Devil In I’ is set in a loft-meets-insane asylum, where each member of Slipknot meets his own destruction. There’s a lot happening throughout the six-minute video, which feels like it could be an elongated intro for ‘American Horror Story.’
