Slipknot’s mad professor opens up on the band’s epic new concert film, Day Of The Gusano

It's been three years since Slipknot's last album .5 The Gray Chapter but the Iowan wrecking machine have kept us satiated with the release of new live movie Day Of The Gusano. Filmed at the band's first-ever show in Mexico City, headlining Knotfest, the historical performance was captured on multiple cameras and directed by Slipknot's purveyor of darkness Shawn Crahan aka Clown.

We caught up with Clown to talk about their Mexican experience and what the future holds for The Knot.

Why did it take Slipknot so long to play Mexico?

“It’s finances, it’s the right time, it’s wondering about that society. It’s very difficult for kids there to pay for tickets. They have to work months and months and months. So it’s just not easy to pick up and go to Mexico City and do a show.”

Why did you film this show in particular, though?

“We’ve heard from day one in our career how crazy Mexican people go off at a show, how unified they are. You say ‘jump’ and they all jump, and you can feel it. So we thought, ‘Why not make this show a Knotfest?’ And we documented it, because it was a really special thing.”

What was your experience in Mexico City?

“I came in about a month or so early to do press and I hung out with all the promoters – they took me to all the food places. I ate all the authentic stuff. I ate crickets, I ate ants, larvae… I will eat anything you want. I love all that stuff.”

Were you concerned about going to Mexico, given it can be dangerous?

“I’m into going anywhere, man. I’ve been told not to go into places, gotten there and they’ve become my favourite places. So I’m very blessed with rock’n’roll pushing me into situations that feel scary or I’m a little insecure about or I don’t know. Rock’n’roll is not politics – I’d never want to be in politics because it’s not my thing, but who doesn’t like rock’n’roll? The police like rock’n’roll. The army like rock’n’roll. Religious people like rock’n’roll. You go into these territories you’re scared of, you’re usually pretty much welcomed with open arms because everybody loves music.”

There are some seriously obsessed fans in the film. Is meeting them still inspiring for you, even at this stage?

“It is, man. It makes me rethink a lot of things. I look at it now, at my age, as being my family, my culture. So if the world continues to be fucked up, I wanna be with my family.”

Where are we at with the new Slipknot album?

The Gray Chapter was pretty much the final learning velocity of our career. We had to replace a bass player, we had to replace a drummer – one of them was walking the earth, the other was buried in the earth. It was a very hard time. People were telling us, ‘How is the band gonna write, Joey and Paul are gone?’ Fuck you. We made a fucking awesome album that we love. And we’re gonna continue to do that. I actually have a date that some of us are gonna get together in a studio and get things going for the next one…”

Really?

“Myself, Jim and Jay went to LA and organised everything we had written out on the road. We wrote 50 fucking ideas. We spent two weeks organising all that, and also adding some stuff that was written a year ago. We have over 27 ideas ready to go – seven or eight of them are full songs. These songs can change, they can be written over, nothing is in stone. But it’s great that we have concrete ideas to begin with. So the future has never been sweeter for Slipknot music. I don’t know what Corey’s got in mind, because he will bring his own songs, too, but we’re just writing music and getting ideas and moods and soundscapes – getting it all fucking together.”

What about the art side of it, you're usually very involved with that process. Any ideas forming?

“I’m studying new forms of art to introduce to the maggots. Because not only will all the old maggots need to be inspired, but what about that whole new generation that we will grab when we come back out? They need to say, ‘Hey, you guys have had Slipknot your whole lives, but this new art is made for us.’ New logos, new videos, new masks, new outfits, new songs, new show. That’s what’s great about Slipknot.”

Those fans play an important role in a new documentary brought to you by MusicScreen, titled "Day Of The Gusano". The 90-minute documentary is to be premiered in more than a thousand screens across the world as a one-night-only cinematic spectacle on September 6.

Watch the trailer below.

Directed by SLIPKNOT's own M. Shawn Crahan, a.k.a. Clown"Day Of The Gusano" documents the Iowa band's first-ever visit to Mexico in December 2015 and features exclusive interviews with SLIPKNOT's members talking about the importance of their fanbase and the band's long-awaited first-ever show in Mexico City.

Confirmed cities and ticketing for the screenings will be announced in July.

Talking about the movie, Clown says: "SLIPKNOT still has dreams for itself. Finally playing Mexico was one of them. It's been a surreal life of rock and roll for SLIPKNOT and the fact that the dreams still go on for us is simply incredible. Thank you." Guitarist Jim Root adds: "We had such a great time at Knotfest Mexico... Not only with all the friends and bands that were there, but with the fans and the crowd we had to document it with. Now we get to share it with the world."

"Day Of The Gusano" also chronicles the rabid devotion of the Mexican maggots and sees the band hearing personal, emotive stories from some of their fans, all interspersed with footage from SLIPKNOT's incendiary live show at the inaugural Knotfest México. The film features a full surround soundtrack, so you'll not only hear the show, but you'll 'feel' it as if you were actually there.

To tie in with the movie announcement, SLIPKNOT also launch their #AskSlipknot campaign. Fans are asked to submit their questions to the band on either Facebook or Twitter, using the hashtag, #AskSlipknot, and a selection will be chosen by the band to answer as part of the cinematic screening event. Submit your questions before June 13 in order to be in with a chance of getting your question included.

SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor told the 97.1 The Eagle radio station last month that the band was "not really doing anything right now." He explained: "I know we're kind of slowly starting to write some music. Other than that, we're just kind of taking some time off. Clown's gonna direct some movies, Sid's gonna do some stuff… We're all kind of doing our own thing… But that's it. I mean, really. Next year is everybody kind of doing their own thing, and then probably after that, we will slowly but surely start to get together to do some SLIPKNOT stuff."

SLIPKNOT percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan has confirmed to Metal Insider that he and guitarist Jim Root will get together in early February to begin writing new music, but will not book any studio time just yet to start recording the follow-up to 2014's ".5: The Gray Chapter". That disc ended a six-year drought between SLIPKNOT albums during which founding bassist Paul Gray passed away in 2010 and drummer Joey Jordison was dismissed in 2013.

Shawn Crahan said: "The '.5 The Gray Chapter' cycle is over. One hundred and ninety shows, thirty countries, three years. I showed up in L.A. January 3rd, 2013 , I had to leave the tour early because my father-in-law passed away. I missed, like, five shows. I didn't get to end the cycle properly, but that doesn't matter, because I lost my father-in-law."

He continued: "Basically, we are taking until February and Jim Root and I are going to do something different. We are not gonna sit around while everyone goes and does their thing, because everyone does their thing. Some people rest, some people do other bands, whatever. All of us feel, I am talking about everybody — Corey TaylorJim Root — we all feel that for the last twenty years we have been doing it one way, so it would be nice to just like examine the song. So we are going to get together in February and we are going to work with different people, different places, make experiences and take the opportunity to get back into a rehearsal room with a lot of us and jam and not feel like a lot of pressure, like, 'Okay we have to get together and in three months write this album.' We want to spend the next year or so diving into the ability to write songs, and explore what we are to the world as musicians and songwriters. So we are very excited to be doing some things differently. We've got full support from the label and everybody around us, and we are going to dive into some very unique thinking, not unlike anything we have ever done. We are just kind of tired of how the pirate ship has gone. I don't really wanna row the oars anymore I want to be an officer or a general."

With SLIPKNOT closing out the touring cycle for ".5: The Gray Chapter", singer Corey Taylor will be regrouping with his other band, STONE SOUR, to record a new set in early 2017.

Shawn Crahan, meanwhile, is pursuing a career as a feature film director. His first effort, "Officer Downe", arrived in theaters and on-demand platforms on Friday (November 18).

Shawn Crahan said a while back that there's always been room for outside projects within the world of SLIPKNOT. "I feel the 'KNOT has always preached personal freedom," he said. "You know, 'Don't ever judge me.' That's what we do, man. We do what we want, we do as much as we want. We'll go shed light to what we are individually out onto the world and then we'll come together like we always do."

SLIPKNOT drummer Jay Weinberg has posted a picture of him holding his gold plaque for ".5: The Gray Chapter". Check it out below.

".5: The Gray Chapter" sold around 132,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 1 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD arrived in stores in October 2014 via Roadrunner.

".5: The Gray Chapter" capped a very turbulent period for the masked rockers in which they dealt with the death of Paul Gray and the firing of drummer Joey Jordison, both longtime members and songwriters. Despite it all, singer Corey Taylor told The Pulse Of Radio he's proud of what the band has accomplished this time out. "The fact that we were able to kind of pull ourselves back up and not only go in and make a really good album, but make an exceptional album, in my opinion, I think it's a testament to just how talented this band is," he said. "It's a testament to how much passion we have for it. It's a testament to how much we're willing to fight to accomplish everything that we want to accomplish. To me, I think it's one of the best albums we've ever made."
