Paul Gray Talks About the Early Days of Slipknot

Slipknot's Paul Gray Reflects on the Band's Early Days

This
year marks the 10-year anniversary of Slipknot's self-titled debut
album for Roadrunner Records. Although an early version of the band
independently released an album called 'Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat' in 1996,
it was their 1999 record that turned the metal world upside down.

Armed
to the teeth with unforgettable tracks like 'Wait and Bleed' and
'Eyeless,' Slipknot's self-titled album is a study in tension, fury and
sheer might. The band might feature nine members but their focused
songwriting and tight musicianship has made their boundless
arrangements feel seamless.

Noisecreep.com
spoke with #2, aka Paul Gray, about the album's anniversary and as
you'll read, the bassist is very appreciative of the career Slipknot
has had so far.

Slipknot is celebrating the anniversary of
the self-titled album's release. 10 years later, what do you remember
most about that time period?

Let me just say that this
entire ride has been great. The first album changed my life 100% dude!
Before it I was homeless and just scraping by day by day. Just the fact
that I can live off of music now is way beyond amazing. I remember
being the death metal guy who would go to shows and dream about being
in a full time band. Back in the early '90s, the scene was so
underground so just getting signed to a label like Roadrunner was huge
for me. But before the self-titled album came out, most of us were in
financial debt.

Read more at Noisecreep.com

Paul Gray Talks About Ross Robinson

Slipknot Bassist Gives Insight Into Working with Ross Robinson

1999's
'Slipknot' album transformed Paul Gray from Iowa metalhead into
full-fledged rock star. The Slipknot bassist has spent the last decade
in a dizzying schedule of writing, recording and touring but it was
that first Roadrunner Records release that sparked the fire. Even Ross
Robinson's (Korn, Machine Head) unorthodox producing style garnered a
lot of press at the time. The word was that he acted more like the
drill sergeant in 'Full Metal Jacket' than he did "rock 'n' roll
producer guy' when he worked with Slipknot.

With the 10th
anniversary of 'Slipknot' upon us, the band has just reissued it in a
special edition box set which features a ton of extra content from the
band including songs that were cut off the record for controversial
reasons. Noisecreep spoke with Gray about working with Robinson and the
folks at Roadrunner Records.

The Ross Robinson legend started
around the time of the self-titled Slipknot album. Was he as tough on
you guys as it was made out in the media?

Paul Gray: He was
on fire dude! When we first met him, I just remember his intensity. His
vibe was perfect for our music and we needed someone like him to get
everything focused. But look, it wasn't like he was yelling at us or
anything. He was fired up and all of that but we loved that about him.
If you listen closely to certain songs, you can actually hear him
screaming in the background. I can hear it pretty easily but then
again, I know the songs inside out. That's how passionate he was when
we were tracking everything. I remember his face and how much his
energy got us going. We'd never experienced anything like that before
but he was never hard on us.

Read more at Noisecreep.com

It's been one hell of a journey over the past 6 days. In our
exclusive interview series, Monte has taken us through the the entire
journey of the debut self titled album from Slipknot. From the first exposure to demos, to meeting the guys for the first
time, seeing them live for the first time, hearing the first mixes of
'Slipknot', being in the studio with the guys through to having the
finished album in his hands and watching the label tak it to the
public- it's all been laid bare in the previous 5 installments.

In
this final part, Monte fills us in on his bonding with Joey Jordison
over his Roadrunner legacy and the 10th Anniversary Edition of the
album which was released earlier this year- what's on there, what isn't
and why it's a worthwhile re-issue.

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.co.uk/page/News?news_id=85626

aren’t sneaking up on anybody at this point in their career. They’ve
spent the past decade turning the metal world end-over-end, their
reputation preceding them as a highlight reel of masked vomit,
broken-bones, head-banging, hair-whipping and apocalyptic mayhem plays
in the background.

They became a product of their own hype
before their hype even had a chance to prove itself, to the point where
their biggest story is often their mere survival

At the recently
re-opened Palladium in Hollywood, CA, Thursday night, Slipknot not only
lived up to the challenge of their hype, but they left it broken,
beaten and scarred into submission. No, Slipknot aren’t going to sneak
up on anybody… But the sheer power and razor-sharp onslaught of their
performance just might.

Click here to read the rest of the review.

Clown Exposure: 100 Percent Against

Here's part 12 of Clown's Noisecreep Photography Blog - Clown Exposure.

Considering
all the crazy things Slipknot percussionist Shawn Crahan has done over
the years, it's kind of funny to hear him talk about how he was once so
opposed to the idea of a friend getting a tattoo on his face that he
spent 31 full days trying to convince the dude not to get inked. Then,
when he realized his pleas were falling on somewhat deaf ears, not only
did he take a Polaroid picture of his friend getting the work done,
years later he pulled it for inclusion in Clown Exposure, labeling it
'100 Percent Against.'

"The gentleman's name is Satone, and he
was my tech for the very first Slipknot record," Crahan tells
Noisecreep. "He's a very close friend. And the man tattooing him is
Jack Lowe. He owns a tattoo shop in Des Moines, Iowa called Skin
Kitchen, and that's where a lot of us in the band get a lot of our ink."

Like
many of Crahan's Polaroids, '100 Percent Against' was manipulated so
that the integrity of the development process was interrupted and the
picture took on an entirely new design. The heart of the picture is
intact, but the image now contains wavy lines and scratches -- and the
edges feature red, psychedelic smears that almost look like lipstick
prints.

Click here to see the latest photo from Clown and read his description of it.
