LAX-A-TIVES!" You never know what's going to rile up a
bunch of metalheads. Monday at The Studio at Webster Hall, the
excitement and stool-loosening call-to-arms came courtesy of Stone
Sour, the more melodic and nuanced spinoff of masked metal kings
Slipknot. The band, featuring Corey Taylor (lead vocals), Jim Root
(lead guitar, backing vocals), Josh Rand (rhythm guitar), Shawn
Economaki (bass guitar) and Roy Mayorga (drums, percussion), was
celebrating the release of its third album "Audio Secrecy" in front of
probably the smallest (300 or so) and rowdiest crowd in the group's
almost two-decade long existence.

Slipknot’s Sid Wilson Talks Bassist’s Death; Preps Solo Album

Slipknot DJ Sid Wilson is preparing to step out from behind his turntable, take off his mask and put away the aliases – #0, Ratboy, DJ Moonboots, DJ Starscream – in order to launch a solo career as… Sid Wilson.

“When I see people, whether they’re strangers or fans or friends or
whatever, everyone is always like, ‘Sid!,’ ” Wilson explains to
Billboard.com. “There’s not a lot of people going, ‘Hey, DJ Starscream!’ or ‘Hey, #0!’
Everyone is always, like, ‘Sid!’ at concerts, at DJ gigs, wherever.
That’s what I hear the public calling for, so I’m going to give that to
them.”

Wilson is currently fronting his own band and has recorded a
self-titled solo album that he hopes to release this fall, though a
label deal is still being negotiated. He describes the disc as “an
eclectic mix of all the different styles of music I grew up listening
to. There’s a strong B-Boy influence in my music, ’cause I’m a DJ. I
used to listen to a lot of Skinny Puppy and more mainstream things that
came out of industrial, like Nine Inch Nails. I was always influenced
by the Beastie Boys a lot and Run-DMC and the way they mixed their rock
influences in their hip-hop stuff.”

Stone Sour’s First-Ever Revolver Magazine Feature

It’s Stone Sour week on Revolvermag.com. In celebration, Revolver Mag resurrected their first-ever Stone Sour feature from the November/December 2002 issue!

WAIT AND BLEED
After five years of service to Slipknot, Corey Taylor and James Root return for a shot of Stone Sour

By Kirk Miller

Corey Taylor’s on a rampage. The Slipknot singer’s decade-old project Stone Sour are just hours from playing an L.A. show—their first appearance outside of Iowa in years—and Taylor’s mind is boiling over with hostile thoughts. And, as usual, he’s going to share them.

“So many bands try to be over the top these days,” he gripes. “It’s
time to let the music do the talking, man. It’s like all these bands
that come out today that are all makeuped out, fucking all decked out…”

All wearing masks?

Taylor and the rest of Stone Sour erupt in laughter.

It’s obvious that this band isn’t the same “People = Shit” animal that Slipknot fans—and journalists—are accustomed to dealing with. It’s kind of…fun.

With the tension dissipated, Taylor continues his rant, this time with a smile. “What Slipknot
were doing was so different,” he explains. “We’ve proved our point, and
now I want to do something completely different. This,” he opens his
arms to the room, “is something we couldn’t do in Slipknot.”

That “something” is Stone Sour, a band Taylor started 10 years ago in Des Moines with drummer Joel Ekman, guitarist Josh Rand, bassist Shawn Economaki, and guitarist James Root, one of Taylor’s Slipknot compatriots. The quintet intended to become the giants of Iowa metal. But things didn’t quite work out as planned.

Get more on Joey Jordison’s life playing guitar in this month’s Metal Hammer. As part of our Gear Of The Gods feature in this month’s Metal Hammer, we asked Joey Jordison to name who he saw as the most underrated guitar player of all time.

“It would probably be Johnny Thunders from the New York Dolls,” says
Jordison. “He might not have been the most technical player, but he had
something about him. Guitar is all about passion and playing with soul
and style. That’s why I love Keith Richards and Johnny Thunders. That’s
more my thing. That’s why I started Murderdolls in the first place.”

Find out what inspired Jordison to learn guitar, the history of
guitars that he’s used and much more about his life with guitars, as
well as the whole story about the revival of The Murderdolls, all in this month’s Metal Hammer – on sale now!

Murderdolls: 'Women and Children Last' Reviews

The return of the Murderdolls is upon us as the band’s sophomore album (and first in 8 years) Women and Children Last hits stores today! Referencing Van Halen’s 1980 opus Women and Children First in their Zeuss-produced album’s title 30 years later, the devilish duo of Joey Jordison and Wednesday 13 have
honed their horror-rock into something darker, grittier and more
refined. Of course we’re biased in are assessment though, so see what
the critics had to say about the gruesome twosome’s new album below.

Women and Children Last is now available in a standard edition, special edition with a bonus DVD, and in the super limited edition ‘Last Aid Kit’ collector’s box. You can also snag a copy digitally via iTunes.

In their 7/10 review, 411mania.com
writes, “Aside from the Murderdolls showing more of their storytelling
technique, the performances this time out are much more refined. Beyond
The Valley… was gloriously sloppy, and it suited that record (and its
lyrics well). This time out, with the band getting a little more
serious, the music had to follow suit as well. The piston grooves and
precision pounding fit Women And Children Last almost too well, giving
even common tracks like ‘Drug Me To Hell’ a sidewinding allure. Others,
like ‘Nowhere’ and ‘Summertime Suicide’ come with melodies that
shouldn’t be allowed to accompany tracks about nihilism and
self-destruction because they’re just too damn happy to fit. And yet,
they still do.”

Altsounds.com
quips, “one listen to Women and Children Last and I’d kind of forgotten
that they had ever been away, which turned out to be one of the more
welcome returns in music today (for me at least). Murderdolls aren’t
reinventing the wheel but for now at least they have managed to put a
new tyre on it.”

In their 4/5 review, spheremag.co.uk writes, “In comparison to ‘BTVOTM’ this album is much deeper and wiser; Wednesday‘s lyrics are less schlock-horror and more sinister wit, not to mention his voice is the best it’s been in years; Wednesday sounds heavier and more defined without depriving us and himself of his characteristic gravely scream. Joey‘s
drums and guitars are as expected…..phenomenal; his riffs are heavy,
power-laden beasts and yet, incredibly catchy, keeping you humming them
for days. This is evident in tracks ‘Nowhere’ and ‘Summertime Suicide’.
These are so upbeat and fun that you can’t help but sing along with the
chorus even on the first listening… Overall, this is a worthy follow-up
to ‘BTVOTM’ and will provide the perfect creepy soundtrack to the summer.”

States thenewreview.net,
“Murderdolls have unleashed a sinfully satisfying experience of an
album steeped in horrifyingly humorous lyrics and ravenous riffage.”

While sonicshocks.com
says, “Politically incorrect, playfully violent, happily inconsiderate,
they may have spent eight years away from the spotlight but man, if
this is what they were up to, fuck yeah, good things come to those who
wait after all… They’re back for more blood, back for revenge, ‘scum,
filth, anger and greed’, this is the world according to Wednesday 13
and Mr Jordison, open your ears and let it rip through you. By the time
‘Women and Children Last’ is over, you’ll be addicted and madly looking
for the repeat button, just like me.”

Joey Jordison Says ‘Slipknot Will Return’

Slipknot’s Joey Jordison recharges after Paul Gray tragedy.

Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison tells Kyle Munson of that he still mourns the passing of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray,
who was found dead May 24 in an Urbandale, Iowa hotel room. “He was my
best friend and still is,” Jordison said. “And he was my musical soul
mate.”

Jordison also reveals that there were times when he could have been
the casualty of rock-star excess and substance abuse in place of his
late bandmate.

“I’ve been done with that stuff for three years,” he says. “I
thought it was all fun and games, but it’s not. … After I got done with
my (2007) tour with Korn, I really went for it after that. … It caught
up with me, and that’s it — I just stopped.”

“Life is definitely a lot more precious now,” he adds. “Music right
now, really, when I play it, it’s like I’m playing it for all the
people that I’ve lost. I think about them all the time.”

On the topic of whether Slipknot will continue, Jordison says, “There will be another Slipknot record, of course.

“But, you know — there aren’t any replacements. Everyone in the band
plays bass and can play guitar. We’ll get to that point when we get
there. But I want everyone to know — and all my Slipknot fans and all my Iowa fans to know — that no matter what I’m doing right now with [Rob] Zombie and Murderdolls, that Slipknot will return.

“But we’re still dealing with the passing of Paul, God rest his soul. … Paul would never want us to not make another Slipknot record.”

“He was my best friend and still is,” Jordison said. “And he was my musical soul mate.”
